BTS Group Holdings Public Company Limited (“BTS Group”), led by Mr. Daniel Ross, Chief Investment Officer and Head of Sustainability, together with Mr. Sumit Srisuntitham, Sustainability Committee Member of BTS Group Holdings Public Company Limited and Chief Operating Officer of Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Company Limited (BTSC), jointly opened the “Active Transit Bangkok: Bicycle and Public Transport 2026” event in celebration of World Bicycle Day 2026. Organised by United Kingdom Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transition (UK PACT), the event brought together leading representatives from both the public and private sectors at the Auditorium, 33rd Floor, BTS Visionary Park.
The event provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss and promote cycling as an sustainable mode of transport that can help alleviate urban traffic congestion, improve air quality, and address climate change challenges. A key highlight of the programme was a panel discussion exploring how bicycles can be better integrated with public transportation systems, particularly rail networks, to enable seamless multimodal journeys, encourage greater public transport usage, and support Bangkok’s transition towards a sustainable and low-carbon transport system.
Mr. Daniel stated, “BTS Group’s mission is to serve as the backbone of a multimodal, decarbonised and safe transportation system. Effective integration with active mobility options, including cycling, is essential to advancing sustainable urban mobility and supporting Thailand’s ambitions to achieve Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, as cities transition towards more active and low-carbon transport systems.”
Mr. Sumit highlighted BTS Group’s ongoing efforts to facilitate bicycle-transit connectivity across rail networks under the Group’s management. Foldable bicycles are currently permitted on the BTS SkyTrain, MRT Yellow Line, and MRT Pink Line throughout operating hours at no additional charge, helping to enhance first- and last-mile connectivity and encourage the use of bicycles for daily commuting.
For non-foldable bicycles, the BTS SkyTrain currently permits access during designated off-peak periods, while the MRT Yellow Line and MRT Pink Line do not currently allow non-foldable bicycles on board. During the panel discussion, participants proposed that BTS Group review its policy regarding non-foldable bicycles to further expand multimodal travel options. The Company acknowledged the recommendation and indicated that it would further evaluate the proposal and gather feedback from both cyclists and passengers to identify an approach that balances convenience, safety, fairness, and operational efficiency.
The discussion also highlighted opportunities to improve bicycle parking facilities at selected stations. BTS Group expressed its willingness to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to expand bicycle parking capacity, strengthen safety measures, and explore the possibility of introducing basic bicycle maintenance services in the future to better support commuters.
Mr. Sumit added that bicycles play an important role as a feeder mode connecting communities to major public transportation networks. By improving accessibility between stations, residential areas, educational institutions, and workplaces, cycling can help reduce carbon emissions, minimise environmental impacts, promote sustainable mobility, and enhance the quality of life for urban residents over the long term.
The event also featured a special session on the challenges, barriers, and opportunities for urban cycling in Bangkok, delivered by Mr. Terames Lertsavetpong, representative of the Bangkok Urban Cycling Alliance (BUCA). Participants also received guidance on cycling warm-up and preparation techniques from Mr. Warawut Jongcharoen (Coach Ton), a cycling coach from Cubic Fitness. The programme concluded with an interactive workshop during which participants collaborated to identify practical solutions for making cycling a more integral part of Bangkok’s future transport system.
